In the agricultural world, fertilizer is a material that is applied to the soil or plants in order to provide vital nutrients that encourage plant growth and raise crop yield. The growth and reproduction of plants depend on these nutrients, which include potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. In order to improve soil fertility and address nutrient deficiencies, fertilizers can be synthetic or organic.
In addition, the type of fertilizer and the particular requirements of the plants determine when to apply it. Considering variables like soil type, climate, and plant nutrient requirements, it is critical to adhere to recommended application rates and guidelines for particular crops.

For instance:
  • Some fertilizers are applied before planting or sowing seeds to provide a nutrient base for young plants.
  • Depending on the stage of growth, crops with high nutrient requirements may require the application of fertilizer. This could include side-dressing or top-dressing during the growing season.
  • According to soil testing, by revealing nutrient levels and deficiencies, soil tests can help determine when to apply fertilizer.
  • Before rainfall or irrigation, fertilizer is better dissolved and absorbed by plants when applied ahead of anticipated rainfall or irrigation.

WEEK 5 (3 NOVEMBER 2023)

SEED HANDLING

VENUE: NURSERY PLOT

SUBMISSION DATE: 8 NOVEMBER 2023

Assalamualaikum and welcome to another blog for the fifth week.

Few days ago, I learned a lot of things during fieldwork period. Dr Zahid shared about Imam Syafie'. I jotted down quickly about it.

Next, we went to nursery plot to do seed handling. Before that we had planters talk about plant propagation.

PLANT PROPAGATION

Plant propagation is the process of increasing the number of plants of a particular species or cultivar. There are two primary forms of plant propagation: sexual and asexual. In nature, propagation of plants most often involves sexual reproduction, or the production of viable seeds.

Coffee seeds

  • Purpose of seed treatment to induces early germination and prevents seed-borne pathogens and pests.

We have to wait around 10 minutes to soak the seed for learning purpose but actually it should be soak for the whole night.

  • Seed treatment refers to the application of various substances to seeds before planting to protect them from diseases, pests, and environmental stressors. The choice of seed treatment depends on the specific needs of the crop and the prevailing environmental conditions. Farmers and growers often use a combination of these treatments to maximize the health and performance of their crops. There are several types of seed treatments, including:
  1. Chemical Seed Treatment
  2. Biological Seed Treatment
  3. Physical Seed Treatment
  4. Genetic Seed Treatment
  5. Nutritional Seed Treatment

While waiting..

We have to prepared growing medium.

And put 2 seeds inside.

My friends and I went to rubber plot after done with seed handling to take some photos for AGR182 assesment.

Lastly, we need to do weeding as usual at nursery plot and transplanting, also cleaned the mini tools before take a break.

Thank you for reading and assalamualaikum :D

WEEK 4 (27 OCTOBER 2023)

PREPARATION OF GROWING MEDIUM

VENUE: NURSERY PLOT

SUBMISSION DATE: 1 NOVEMBER 2023

Hi and assalamualaikum everyone! I wanted to greet you and express my gratitude for your time spent on the blog. Life is busy and hectic, so I truly appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to read my blog. I would like to share my activities on the forth week regarding preparation of growing medium.

As usual, we need to perform Fajr prayer together at Surau At-Taqwa before went to rollcall and listened to Planters talk and it was very interesting topic to shared about.

Next, all of part 2 gathered at nursery plot to learned about preparation of growing medium.

WHAT IS GROWING MEDIUM?

A growing medium, also known as a "growing substrate" or "growing media," is a material used in horticulture and agriculture to support plant growth by providing physical support, allowing for proper root development, and retaining moisture and nutrients. Common growing mediums include soil, peat moss, coconut coir, perlite, vermiculite, and various soilless mixes. It provides physical support for the plant, allows for proper root development, and can retain moisture and nutrients.

Prepare composite mixture of soil, organic fertilizer, sand in 3:2:1 volume by volume ratio. Fill the pot with prepare media. support, aeration, nutrient and moisture retention. The selection of components generally depends on their availability and cost.

ADVANTAGES OF GROWING MEDIUM

It's important to choose the right growing medium for your specific plants and growing conditions to maximize these advantages.

1. Improved aeration: Growing mediums can provide better aeration to plant roots, allowing for proper oxygen exchange and reducing the risk of root rot.

2. Moisture retention: They can retain moisture, helping to maintain consistent soil moisture levels, which is crucial for plant health.

3. Nutrient support: Many growing media are designed to contain essential nutrients, promoting healthy plant growth. This is especially important for hydroponic and container gardening.

4. Consistency: Growing media offer a uniform and consistent environment for plant roots, which can lead to more predictable and reliable results.

5. Reusability: Some growing media can be reused, which can be cost-effective over time.

I guess that's all for now. Thank you for reading my blog.

WEEK 3 (20 OCTOBER 2023)

IDENTIFICATION, LABELLING AND INVENTORY OF CROPS PLANTS

VENUE: PLOT DURIAN

SUBMISSION DATE: 25 OCTOBER 2023

On the third week, students part 1, 2 and three must perform Fajr congregation prayer. I woke up on 0445 to get ready and went to Surau At-Taqwa by 0530.

On 0630, all of us gathered as usual to warm up body before get started doing activities.

For the 3rd week, we have Madam Maryam briefed regards the title for this week which is, Identification, Labelling and Inventory of crops plants, following the plan lesson.

Purpose of plant identification in agriculture is for farmers use it to manage crops and control pests and diseases. Next, labeling crops and plants in a field or garden is important for organization and tracking. Last but not least, do not forget to use labels that are weather-resistant and won't easily deteriorate. Ensure to check regularly and update labels as needed, especially if there are multiple plant varieties or need to track specific information about each plant.

LABELLING YOUR PLANTS
  1. Use plant markers or stakes made of materials like plastic, wood, or metal. Write the plant's name, variety, or any other relevant information on the marker. Place the marker in the soil next to the plant.
  2. Use color-coded markers or tags to indicate different plant varieties or types.
  3. Keep a map of your garden or field with corresponding labels for each plant or row.

Example of labelling I did on my plant bed.

"The tagging on our planting bed have our information such as name, class, student id, name of the crop and their scientific name also our lecturer and planters executive in charge. Each of us must put the tagging on our planting bed which is locate on in front of our planting bed." - Quate from my blog past semester.

Other than labelling, inventory management in agriculture is crucial for efficient farm operations and sustainable practices. It involves tracking and managing various resources and assets.

After done listened to lecturer, I changed into boots and went to plot durian to learn how to prunning.

HOW TO PRUNING?

MY CLASSMATE AND I TOOK A PICTURES TOGETHER TO KEEP AS A MEMORY.

Then, we went to ladang angkat, nursery plot around 0945 and did some maintenance with En. Naim untill 1100.

All of us felt so thankful to our lecturer because she bought us some drinks during hot weather and very tiring activities.

Alhamdulilah, thanks to Allah, I gained a lot of knowledge and get to shared together with my readers, thank you for reading. See you soon!
