SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION 

VENUE: PLOT LEMONGRASS

Hi and assalamualaikum everyone! Welcome back to my blog on the second week of Fieldwork II. I am so excited to share with you about my activities on 13th October 2023. As usual, I started my day early than other course to attend roll call and assembly at Agrotech.  

Then, all of students need to move to their own plot except part 3. They were attended forum session, 'Bicara dan Santun Alumni' and I was envy about it :) I wish I could attend too! Next, I thought my class will go to plot nursery following the last week but surprisingly, we went to lemongrass place which took less steps to arrived there. 

Sir Selvi taught G16 about site selection and preparation. 

As planters we are discipline and responsibility to jot-down important information and knowledge. 

Straw hat is very important to protect head from direct sunlight to avoid heatstroke. However there are ideal hours to get vitamin from sunlight. Morning sunshine between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. is ideal. The hours after 10 a.m. and up until about 4 p.m. are known to have stronger, more direct rays. Being outdoors unprotected during this period increases your risk for sunburn and skin cancers. To protect your skin, you can apply sunscreen every three hours. 

 SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION

•  L O C A T I O N

1. It must be strategic location to open a crop plot. To make it more easier for transportation transfer the product after harvest to go to supermarket or place to sell. 
2. NO CONSTRUCTION- Curing concrete near a stream may affect water quality. Other than that, roads or bridges may increase the amount of silt or gravel in the stream. 
3. Following wind direction

1. Avoid wind drift of sprayed pesticides 
2. Use interception ditches to avoid pesticide runoff
3. For an example: Ganoderma- Fungi causing disease that resulted in the infection and rotting of the stem, roots or trunk base of palm trees.

• G OO D I R R I G A T I O N 

1. To make sure crop receive enough quantity and quality of water for grown up.

Place where plants are grown for transplanting, for use as stock for budding and grafting for sale.

That's all for lectured from Sir Selvi. After that we lined up to take a hoe and bring it to next plot because Sir Selvi gave an instruction to do weeding at lemongrass plot. 

Purpose of weeding is protects the plants from pests and helps in loosening of soil so that roots of the desired plants can penetrate easily. The growth of weeds is harmful as they consume a lot of fertilizers, water, sunlight etc which ultimately reduces the crop yield. 

Take a break and drink enough water to keep body hydrated. 

Every students must have those items with themselves every field work lesson.
