WEEK 8 (19 MAY 2023)
WEEDING
VENUE: FIELD, UiTM JASIN
SUBMISSION DATE: 22 MAY 2023

On the eighth week, our activity is weeding. We're just doing the general maintenance for the planting bed such as watering the plants, remove the weeds on our planting bed and others. Besides that, we also take some initiative to make a shelter on our farm because the functions of the shelter was to protects us from the sun's heat when all of us take a rest.

Before adding new mulch on top of the crop, we need to clear the planting bed from weeds.

Weed in general term for any plant growing where it is not wanted. Ever since humans first attempted the cultivation of plants, they have had to fight the invasion by weeds into areas chosen for crops.

Based on Wikipedia, weed is a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation, growing where it is not wanted. In such environments, other plant species are considered undesirable and therefore weeds. Besides, some weeds have undesirable characteristics making them a plant pest in most human settings.

In addition, w
eeds compete with the main crop plant for air, water ,sunlight and nutrients in the soil making them deficient for the main crop. Also, they are not of use to humans. Thus they affect the growth of the plant and their removal is necessary.

There are several type of weeds.

The weed that grew on my planting bed is Digitaria ciliaris and next week we are going to learn about pesticide and herbicides.

Method of controlling weed include hand-pulling, hoeing, mowing, plowing, disking, cultivating and digging. Other than that, biological weed control involves the use of other living organisms, such as insects, diseases, or livestock, for the management of certain weeds.

For this week, we used NPK Green for our crops. Based on Wikipedia, iagriculture, a green manure is a crop specifically cultivated to be incorporated into the soil while still green. Typically, the green manure's biomass is incorporated with a plow or disk, as is often done with (brown) manure. The primary goal is to add organic matter to the soil for its benefits. Green manuring is often used with legume crops to add nitrogen to the soil for following crops, especially in organic farming, but is also used in conventional farming.

It’s no secret that plants are living beings, and just like us animals, plants also need a well-balanced diet in order to thrive. Consider fertilizers to be like multivitamins for your plants. While plants are already naturally great at absorbing nutrients in the soil and in the air the reality is that they often cannot access all of the important nutrients necessary for excellent health.

There may be some chemicals already available in the soil and air but the reality is that more often than not these sources do not readily provide all the ingredients required for optimal growth. In fact, the nutrients that plants need most are often lacking first because plants already use large amounts of them to survive and grow. Therefore, it is important for gardeners to understand the nutritional ingredients that plants require and that fertilizers offer.

Three pinch of NPK Green.

Mix with water in watering can.

Last but not least, we started to prepare planting stakes.
