ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In the world of agriculture, the choices for fertilizers are as diverse as the crops they nourish. There are three main types to consider: single element fertilizers, like urea, which contain solely nitrogen; organic fertilizers, sourced from compost extracts and other natural materials; and chemical fertilizers, such as NPK blends. Each type carries its own benefits and drawbacks. Overuse of nitrogen, for instance, can lead to leaf yellowing and toxicity, while phosphorus is vital for supporting robust root growth. Single element fertilizers may offer simplicity but come with increased costs, time, and labor demands. On the other hand, mix fertilizers, while convenient, can clump if not stored properly. Amidst these options, there's a rising star: SRF fertilizers, engineered for slow release and sustainability, particularly suitable for sub-soil environments like hillsides where rain-induced leaching is a concern.

WEEKLY REPORT

DATE

26 April 2024

WEEK

5

PLACE

Farm Management Unit, UiTM Melaka Kampus Jasin.

MELIPONINI PLOT, LADANG ANGKAT.

DETAILS INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

Week 5 is our second physical learning session with all parts 1, 2 and 3. For the second learning session, four classes from part 3 have been divided into their own Ladang Angkat to take care of for the whole semester. Next, my class has been assigned to care for the Meliponini Plot which is a stingless bees plot. Sir Zafri briefed my class regarding pest and disease management this time.

OBJECTIVE(S)

In stingless bee plots, managing pests and diseases has two benefits: first, it safeguards the bee colonies, ensuring their well-being and productivity in pollination and honey production. Second, it helps to preserve biodiversity in the habitat, maintain ecological balance, and promote the health of other plant and animal species in the ecosystem.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

  • Boot

  • Glove

  • Straw hat

NATURE OF WORK DONE

8.00 am

  • Listened to Sir Zafri’s lecturer and briefing about pest and disease management.

8.30 am

  • End of the class

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Pest and disease management in stingless bee plots is an important aspect of beekeeping that aims to keep colonies healthy and vital while also supporting overall ecosystem balance. Beekeepers identify and address potential threats to stingless bee colonies' health through careful monitoring and proactive measures. Integrated pest management strategies, such as cultural, biological, and chemical control methods, are frequently used to reduce risks while minimizing environmental impact. In order to maintain the sustainability of stingless beekeeping operations, regular inspections, hygienic procedures, and the application of natural remedies help prevent infestations and outbreaks. Pest and disease management efforts benefit both stingless bee populations and the ecosystems they inhabit by prioritizing colony health and preserving biodiversity within their habitats.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Weeding is an essential practice in agriculture, crucial for maintaining the health and appearance of farms. Farmers employ various methods to tackle weeds, ranging from manual labor to mechanical tools and even biological interventions. Each approach serves the purpose of minimizing competition for nutrients among crops, ensuring they receive the vital resources they need to thrive. Additionally, weeding contributes to the aesthetic appeal of the farm, keeping it tidy and visually pleasing. By implementing these diverse weeding techniques, farmers can effectively manage weed growth while fostering a productive and attractive agricultural environment.

WEEK 10 (15 DECEMBER 2023)

GRADING OF PLANTS, HARDENING OFF AND TRANSPLANTING

VENUE: PINEAPPLE PLOT

SUBMISSION DATE: 20 DECEMBER 2023

Hi and assalamualaikum all of my readers. Alhamdulilah, I'm so happy because I can still write and share my journey during fieldwork for ten weeks, such a long journey to go through together. Thank you to my friends, lecturers and classmate for giving me a new experience and shared a lot of knowledge. I appreciate a lot and I have a few good news to share with.

First of all, this page going to be the last blog for fieldwork lesson. It is because, my next assesment is innovation project, my groupmate and I have to find ideas to create an innovation to apply and use in plant sector and present the project to lecture. This assesment also required a report to complete this task. Secondly, we are going to have online lesson for fieldwork on the next Friday, because semester break is around the corner. Lastly, I just left one semester for fieldwork which is next year and I am going to have internship for this semester on 19th February 2024 at UiTM Jasin. That's all some update from me for now.

Next, I want to share about my activities on week 10.

  • Plant grading is the process of classifying or arranging plants according to their size, quality, or other attributes. More efficient plant organization and sales are made possible by this method.
  • The process of gradually acclimating seedlings or plants grown indoors to outdoor conditions is known as "hardening off." This is letting them experience more sunlight, wind, and colder temperatures in order to get them used to the change from a controlled environment to the more challenging conditions found in the garden.
  • Plants are transplanted when they are moved to a new location, like from seed trays to garden soil or from smaller pots to larger ones. Because they are more suited to their new surroundings, plants that have been properly graded and hardened off have a higher chance of surviving transplantation.

I have some snack for breakfast after assembly end.

We're using hoe to do weeding at pineapple plot but first, we must alert about the procedure to using tools and equipment from store. We must take and keep it back properly and in good condition, which mean we need to wash and clean the equipment before sort in return.

These are some photos shows how we did weeding together.

Soft reminder: Breakfast is important meal to take in the morning before you do your work or else you will get gastric attack just like my friend :)

After done activity on pineapple plot, all of us take a rest before proceed work at ladang angkat. We're continued with maintenace which is weeding manually and did plant propagation for 150 polybags. It took more than 2 hours and we finished on 12pm.

Hihihi before go back to the college, my friends harvest some of Brazilian spinach and ate together. I guess that's all from me. Thank you for your time and goodbye.
